  • Bihar moves to ban pan masala ads on govt hoardings

  • The State Tobacco Control Coordination Committee (STCCC), decided to press for the ban and move the urban development and housing department at its seventh meeting here on Monday.

  • The STCCC decided to extend section 5 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which bans direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco and its related products, to cover pan masala as well.

  • Pan masala had hitherto evaded the COTPA ban as they come under the food safety and standards Act, 2006. However, the STCCC, Bihar, took pan masala as surrogate advertisement of tobacco-related products and decided to stretch the COTPA to cover them.

  • The PMC has already put an embargo on free sale of all kinds of tobacco product under its jurisdiction. Traders of tobacco or its related products are required to obtain a licence from the PMC.
