  • Child welfare committees to be restructured soon

  • AFTER months of condemnation and criticism, the state government has now decided to restructure child welfare committees (CWC) across the state.

  • The social welfare department has decided that the CWCS will not have any nominated members and now the candidates will be selected through examination and screening. Besides, biometric system will be installed in every CWC office to keep track of the attendance and activities of the members.

  • The number of monthly meetings too has been increased from 12 to 20. Very soon computer operators, IT staff and clerks would also be appointed to keep record of the office proceedings and maintain digital documentation of the CWC meetings.

  • At present only 14 CWCS are functioning. We scrapped the rest because of irregularities reported by the TISS. At some places the licence could not be renewed because of lack of quorum.

  • For improvement, the CWC has to hold minimum 20 meetings and it would cost the department more than Rs 2 lakh every month
