Over 250 farmers to lose DBT transfers due to stubble burning
The state government, following the ban on stubble burning in the fields to check pollution and arrest the decline in quality of soil, has started taking action against over 250 farmers found engaged in crop burning in six districts last month, by denying them benefits from agriculture department through direct benefit transfer (DBT).
The move is seen as an attempt to dissuade the farmers from crop burning after the harvest of paddy and wheat produce, the two main crops in Bihar during kharif and rabi season.
Sources said the agriculture department had already blocked the registration of erring farmers for three years, a few days back, rendering them ineligible for any assistance like diesel subsidy, input subidy , subsidy on purchasing equipment for farm mechanisation and other assistance for minor irrigation.
In Bihar, the practice of stubble burning was low but it has picked in last one decade with farmers following the practice as in Punjab because of the larger use of harvester machines, which only cuts the grains and leaves the stubble in the field.
