In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the state government will table a ‘Green Budget’ in the legislative assembly on March 15 after the general budget, which would be present on February 25 by deputy CM and finance minister Sushil Modi.

Green budget implies that the budgeted money would be spent by various departments for the restoration of degraded ecological systems in the state and conservation of the existing ones so that the restoration of the ecological system, including its bio-diversity, is achieved over time. The aim is to improve the living conditions of human beings as well as wild life.

It would be tabled in the assembly along with gender and child budgets on March 15. An overview of the expenditures made on environmental conservation activities during 2019-20 financial year would also be included in it.

The budget would have two components —expenditures to be incurred on physical restoration of environmental degradation and non-physical investments (like publicity drives, public awareness and inclusion of environmental studies in school curriculum among others).
