  • Chhath sites in state with ‘links’ to Lord Krishna

  • Some Sun temples and ponds, which are considered as major destinations of Chhath or Surya Shashthi puja in the state these days, are stated to have an ancient origin.

  • Ancient texts, mythologies and folklore suggest that these structures and sites date back to Dwapar and Treta ages. Most of these ancient temples are believed to have connections with Saamb, son of Lord Krishna, who was cursed with leprosy and had worshipped the Sun God for years at these ponds as he was advised to seek his blessings for salvation, offering him the Arghya (water-offering). Other connections are linked to Dhaniya, the sister of Jarasadh, the emperor of the Magadha kingdom and with an Ikshavaku dynasty ruler of Ayodhya, King Aila.

  • Some of the temples constructed by Saamb are believed to be the famous sun temple at Konark, Odisha, Olark Sun temple at Ular, Punyark sun temple and Barark sun temple at Baragan.
