BIHAR

  • Winter over, but air quality index in city still ‘very poor’

  • Even though scientists often claim that air quality is observed poorer in winter season owing to dense air, Patna has been reporting worse air quality than Delhi for the past few days even after departure of crisp weather.
Based on the average air quality index (AQI) data of 24 hours released by Central Pollution Control Board, Patna’s air quality has been worse than Delhi for at least past four days.

  • The AQI is an assessment of the air quality taking into account eight pollutants – PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 10 microns), PM10 (particulate matter less than 10 microns), nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, ammonia and lead. When the AQI crosses 300, it is considered hazardous. The prominent pollutant in Patna is PM2.5. In Delhi, both PM2.5 and PM10 cause pollution.

  • Bihar State Pollution Control Board chairman Ashok Kumar Ghosh attributed the poor air quality in Patna to vehicular emissions and high level of dust particles in the lower level of atmosphere.

  • It is in acknowledgement of the need of more monitoring stations in the state capital that provisions have been made in the state budget for setting up four new monitoring stations in the state capital. The budget for the ongoing fiscal (2017-18) also had provisions for two new air quality monitoring stations.
