- 7k of 30k murders in UP-Bihar in 2016
- The popular perception that crime graph has gone down after prohibition in Bihar last year notwithstanding, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that the state saw the second highest number of cases of heinous crime, including murder, after UP in 2016.
- According to the NCRB data for 2016 released on Thursday, UP recorded 4,889 of the 30,450 murders in the country. It was followed by Bihar where 2,581 murders took place last year.
Bihar with 18.4% share topped the list of offences against public tranquillity (riots, group clashes, vandalism at public places etc) in 2016. It was followed by UP (12%) and Maharashtra (11.9%).
- Bihar also topped the list of cases in which juveniles were booked under the Arms Act. Of the 228 such cases reported in the country, Bihar reported 79 followed by Madhya Pradesh (38) and Rajasthan (19).
Together the two neighbouring states accounted for 7,470 murders — almost one fourth of the total cases of murder.

- India re-elected to International Maritime Organisation Council
- India was re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation under Category B at an assembly of the body at its headquarters in London.
- Indian High Commissioner to the UK YK Sinha represented India at the assembly where India secured the second-highest number of votes (144) from member-countries, just after Germany’s 146 and ahead of Australia’s 143.
- The other countries to make the cut included France (140), Canada (138), Spain (137), Brazil (131), Sweden (129), The Netherlands (124) and the UAE (115).

- The time Global Sustainability Film Awards was launched in 2012. It is an annual film competition for companies and institutions, recognising those whose films most powerfully portray solutions for sustainability.
